NDMA Issues Flood and Landslide Alerts for Gilgit-Baltistan and AJK Amid Monsoon Rains

The NDMA has urged the public to stay informed about changing weather conditions and possible hazards.

Islamabad:  The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), through its National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), has issued flood and landslide alerts for several regions of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) in anticipation of monsoon rains expected from July 28 to 31.

According to the NEOC, moderate to heavy rainfall is forecasted in Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, and Shigar in Gilgit-Baltistan, and in Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, and Bagh in AJK. These downpours may result in flash floods and, in mountainous regions, potential landslides.

Additionally, in Chitral Valley—particularly in Buni and Reshun—rainfall combined with glacial melt is likely to increase the water flow in the River Chitral, posing a flood risk. Urban flooding is also a concern in Muzaffarabad and Bagh due to expected heavy showers.

In response, the NDMA has directed all relevant departments and emergency services to remain on high alert. Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) and local administrations have been instructed to take immediate preventive measures, ensure the deployment of rescue personnel and machinery, and prepare for any emergency.

The authority reiterated its commitment to coordinating closely with provincial and district agencies to minimize risks and protect lives and property in the affected regions.
