India Suspends Indus Waters Treaty and Closes Borders with Pakistan

India's 2019 Kashmir Revocation Sparks Protests and Anger

ISLAMABAD, April 23, 2025 – In a major escalation of tensions, India has announced the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and ordered all Pakistani citizens to leave India within 48 hours. This decision was confirmed by India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday, which also declared the closure of the Attari and Wagah borders, preventing Pakistani citizens from traveling to India under the SAARC visa exemption.

Vikram Misri, India’s top diplomat, announced that the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, which has governed the sharing of water resources between India and Pakistan, would be terminated with immediate effect. Additionally, India has decided to recall all its defense attachés from Islamabad.

The announcement comes in the wake of a deadly attack in Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in the Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir region, where at least 26 people were killed. The attack has sparked widespread condemnation, with Indian media and social media accounts associated with the intelligence agency RAW quickly pointing fingers at Pakistan, spreading baseless allegations. Some reports have attempted to portray the attack as being religiously motivated, alleging that non-Muslim tourists were deliberately targeted.

The Indian media’s narrative has raised further concerns about its credibility, given the ongoing propaganda and attempts to frame the incident in a certain light.

The situation has been further exacerbated by India’s controversial actions in 2019 when it revoked Kashmir’s special status and bifurcated the state into two union territories—Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. This move led to widespread protests and anger, particularly as it allowed local authorities to grant domicile rights to outsiders.

In response to the tragic loss of lives in Pahalgam, Pakistan has expressed deep concern over the incident. The Foreign Office of Pakistan issued a statement offering condolences to the families of those killed in the attack and wished a swift recovery for those injured.

The attack and subsequent developments have further strained relations between India and Pakistan, with the world watching closely as both nations navigate this sensitive and volatile situation.
