Imran Khan Accuses Lawmakers of Treason for Supporting 26th Amendment

Ex-Prime Minister asserts that votes for the amendment undermine Pakistan’s Constitution.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan declared on Tuesday that those who supported the 26th Constitutional Amendment have committed a grave betrayal against Pakistan. His statement comes as his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), investigates lawmakers suspected of violating party directives.

“I want to emphasize that anyone who voted in favor of the 26th Constitutional Amendment has weakened Pakistan’s constitutional foundations and betrayed the nation,” Khan stated while speaking to reporters at Adiala Jail.

The government narrowly passed amendments to the constitution on October 21, expanding lawmakers’ authority over the appointment of top judges, who have issued recent rulings in favor of opposition leader Imran Khan.

The judicial reforms alter the appointment process for the Chief Justice of Pakistan and the formation of judicial benches. Additionally, they establish a target date to eliminate riba (interest-based banking) “as practicable” by January 1, 2028.

According to reports, some PTI lawmakers defected, choosing to support the amendment against the party’s official stance. PTI lawmaker Sher Afzal Marwat, appearing on *Spotlight with Munizae Jahangir* on Monday, disclosed that around 21 PTI members of the National Assembly broke ranks during the amendment vote.

Khan described his confinement as “mentally torturous” and condemned his treatment, saying it was “deplorable and inhumane.” He recounted enduring five days without power in his cell, which left him in “complete darkness,” and claimed he was denied outdoor access for 10 days.

For weeks, he said, his doctors, family, and lawyers were barred from visiting him.

Despite these challenges, Khan reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing “Haqeeqi Azadi” (true freedom) for Pakistanis. He criticized PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, claiming that Sharif has no genuine interest in Pakistan’s future, as his assets are held abroad, and accused him of returning to Pakistan solely to exploit its resources before leaving again.

Khan also voiced deep concerns about the “abduction” of his aide Waqar Panjutha, asserting that the enforced disappearance stemmed from a “personal vendetta” against him. He condemned the “lawlessness” in Pakistan, noting it has been 21 days since Panjutha was taken and questioned the silence of the courts on this matter.
