KABUL: Afghanistan‘s cricket star Gulbadin Naib has opened up about what he considers to be the most intense rivalry in international cricket, placing Afghanistan’s contests with Pakistan at the top. Speaking ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, Naib highlighted the unparalleled passion and electric atmosphere that surrounds every encounter between the two neighboring nations. “The rivalry with Pakistan is much more intense than India-Afghanistan,” Naib said. “Whenever we face Pakistan, the atmosphere is electric, whether in India, Pakistan, or Dubai. It’s a clash that brings out the best in both teams.”
Naib, who has been showcasing his all-round talents in the ongoing 2025 DP World ILT20 season with Dubai Capitals, is enjoying a surge in confidence following his match-winning performance on February 2. He played a crucial role in his team’s qualification for the tournament’s playoffs, scoring a quick-fire 47 off 25 balls and taking an important wicket in their victory over Abu Dhabi Knight Riders.
Reflecting on his cricketing journey, the 33-year-old acknowledged the importance of platforms like the DP World ILT20 for Afghan cricketers. “It’s an excellent opportunity for Afghan cricketers to step up and prove themselves among the best,” he said.
