Government Strengthens Electoral and Anti-Corruption Measures with New Ordinances

Election Act and NAB Ordinances Approved by Acting President Gilani

In a move aimed at strengthening the electoral process and anti-corruption efforts, the federal government has issued two amendment ordinances, which have been approved by Acting President Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani.
Election Act Ordinance

The Election Act Amendment Ordinance brings a significant change to the composition of the Election Tribunal, which deals with election-related grievances.

As per the new ordinance, a retired judge can now be appointed to the Election Tribunal, in addition to serving judges of the High Court. This amendment aims to ensure that election disputes are resolved more efficiently and effectively.

The Election Act 2023 has been amended through this ordinance, which is expected to bring more transparency and fairness to the electoral process.

NAB Ordinance

The NAB Amendment Ordinance, on the other hand, has increased the remand period for accused individuals from 14 days to 40 days. This move is aimed at giving the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) more time to investigate and gather evidence in corruption cases.

The extension of the remand period is expected to help NAB to conduct more thorough investigations and bring more corrupt individuals to justice.
