Georgia Stun Portugal in EURO 2024 Debut

Under manager Willy Sagnol, Georgia defied expectations.

Gelsenkirchen, Germany: In a night that will be etched in Georgian football history, debutants Georgia stunned Portugal 2-0 to secure a historic qualification for the knockout stages of the European Championship.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Georgia’s star winger, became an instant national hero by firing home the opening goal within two minutes. Portugal’s Antonio Silva’s misplaced pass gifted Georges Mikautadze the chance to set up Kvaratskhelia for a clinical finish.

The second half saw Mikautadze emerge as a two-goal hero, converting a penalty after Silva brought down Luca Lochoshvili in the box. This marked Mikautadze’s third goal of the tournament, making him the top scorer.

Despite Portugal coach Roberto Martinez resting key players after securing Group F victory, the gamble backfired spectacularly. Cristiano Ronaldo’s wait for a goal continues, with Portugal facing Slovenia in the next round.
