Experts Warn of Health Risks Due to Neglecting Water Consumption in Winter

Experts Warn: Dehydration Can Lead to Dry, Cracked, and Irritated Skin in Winter

ISLAMABAD: As winter’s chill settles in, health experts are urging the public not to overlook the importance of hydration during colder months. Contrary to the belief that the body needs less water in winter, medical professionals and nutritionists warn that inadequate water intake can lead to serious health complications, including cardiovascular diseases, premature aging, weight gain, and dehydration-related ailments.

Nutritionists emphasize that the body requires consistent hydration year-round, and the reduced sense of thirst in winter should not be mistaken for a lesser need for water. Drinking hot beverages like tea and coffee, often consumed more during winter, can actually worsen dehydration due to their diuretic effects.

Hydrating properly in winter offers numerous benefits, including regulating body temperature, combating lethargy, and supporting detoxification processes through the liver and kidneys. Lack of sufficient water intake can hinder these processes, potentially leading to long-term health risks.

Experts also highlighted the impact of dehydration on skin health, causing dryness, cracking, and irritation. Joint pain, cognitive impairment, and increased susceptibility to infections are other potential consequences. Chronic dehydration can also result in kidney damage, respiratory issues, and dangerously low blood pressure.

To avoid these risks, experts recommend prioritizing water consumption even in the absence of thirst, and adopting healthier hydration habits to ensure well-being throughout the winter season.
