DPM Dar Highlights Pakistan’s Commitment to SDGs at UN Ministerial Forum in New York

Dar Highlights Climate Goals, Economic Reforms at UN Forum

New York – Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, held high-level engagements at the United Nations headquarters, reaffirming Pakistan’s strong support for multilateralism, sustainable development, and global peace.

In a significant meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Senator Dar reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the UN Charter and the vital role of the United Nations in addressing global challenges. He emphasized Pakistan’s support for dialogue and diplomacy in conflict resolution and commended the Secretary-General’s efforts in promoting international peace, particularly his leadership in de-escalating tensions in South Asia.

The two leaders discussed key issues on the Security Council agenda, including the Middle East crisis and the situation in Iran. Senator Dar strongly reiterated Pakistan’s principled stance on the Palestinian issue, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, opposition to illegal Israeli annexation plans in the West Bank, and full support for Palestinian statehood. They also exchanged views on the upcoming High-Level International Conference on Palestine, scheduled for next week in New York.

Highlighting issues of national and regional concern, Senator Dar raised the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, violations of the Indus Waters Treaty, and externally sponsored terrorism in Pakistan. He urged a just resolution of the Kashmir issue in line with UN Security Council resolutions.

As part of his day at the UN, Senator Dar addressed the Ministerial Segment of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), where he expressed concern that only 35% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are currently on track. He attributed the stagnation to the compounded impact of COVID-19, financial crises, and climate change.

Despite these hurdles, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm commitment to the 2030 Agenda. He outlined national initiatives such as the “Uraan Pakistan” strategy, Benazir Income Support Programme, and Benazir Nashonuma project aimed at inclusive development. He also discussed youth-focused projects like the Digital Youth Hub, as well as environmental efforts including “Recharge Pakistan” and “Living Indus.”

Senator Dar highlighted Pakistan’s target of 60% renewable energy by 2030 and the role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council in attracting foreign investment and ensuring macroeconomic stability.

Calling for urgent global cooperation, he pressed for reform of the international financial architecture, increased concessional financing, debt relief, and climate finance for developing nations. He also urged implementation of the “Compromiso de Seville” as a roadmap to bridge the SDG financing gap.

Senator Dar’s visit includes meetings with top UN officials, participation in the BBNJ Agreement signing ceremony on marine biodiversity, and presiding over key events during Pakistan’s presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of July.
