Clarity Prevails: ECP rejects KP Bar’s misinformation on NA seats
The ECP underscored that the determination of seats for the National and Provincial Assemblies falls within the purview of the Parliament.
In a decisive move to counter misinformation, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has debunked claims by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council regarding a reduction in National Assembly seats. The ECP declared the assertions as baseless, emphasizing that such statements aim to sow confusion among the public.
Setting the record straight, an ECP spokesman clarified that the 25th constitutional amendment in 2018 led to the merger of the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Consequently, 12 National Assembly seats in FATA were eliminated, while six seats were added to the National Assembly representation of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The spokesman highlighted that far from a reduction, the National Assembly seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have increased from 39 to 45. Similarly, the Provincial Assembly seats have seen a rise from 99 to 115, including an additional 16 general seats. This adjustment reflects the constitutional changes brought about by the merger and aims to better represent the newly integrated regions.
The ECP underscored that the determination of seats for the National and Provincial Assemblies falls within the purview of the Parliament. It further emphasized its commitment to upholding the constitution and the law, emphasizing that the commission operates independently and without any external pressure.
