China Vows to Enhance Security for Its Citizens in Pakistan After Engineer Killings
China announced on Thursday that it would collaborate closely with Pakistan to safeguard the security of Chinese citizens, projects, and institutions within the country following the fatal attack that killed two Chinese engineers.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that she was not aware of any reports indicating that Pakistani authorities intended to restrict the movement of Chinese nationals during the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting due to security concerns from militant groups. This comes amidst claims from several sources, including three security officials and an internal security document, suggesting that such measures were being considered.
The Chinese Embassy in Pakistan confirmed on Monday that two of its citizens had been killed and another injured, alongside local casualties.
In response to the incident, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the Chinese Embassy to offer his condolences to Ambassador Jiang Zaidong, while police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against leaders of the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). Authorities suspect that the banned group, possibly with the aid of a foreign intelligence agency, aimed to disrupt Pakistan-China relations by targeting Chinese nationals.
The FIR was filed by Station House Officer (SHO) Moosa Kaleem Khan of the Airport Police Station at the Counter-Terrorism Department.
A solemn ceremony took place at Karachi’s Old Terminal, attended by Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, and other officials, to repatriate the bodies of the two engineers to China. A minute of silence was observed in their memory, and both the governor and the chief minister expressed their condolences to the victims’ families and the Chinese government.
President Asif Ali Zardari also visited the Chinese Embassy to express condolences on behalf of the Pakistani government and people. In a strong statement condemning the attack, he reassured that Pakistan remains committed to holding the perpetrators accountable. He underscored Pakistan’s solidarity with China and praised China’s role in Pakistan’s socio-economic development.
During a meeting with Ambassador Jiang Zaidong, President Zardari condemned the hostile elements behind the attack, stating that their actions would not weaken the strong bond between Pakistan and China. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals residing in the country.
