Chairman JKSM Urges UN to Implement 1949 Resolution on Kashmir

JKSM Reports Alarming Rise in Violence and Repression in Jammu and Kashmir Since 2019

Islamabad: Altaf Ahmed Bhat, Chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Salvation Movement (JKSM), has called on the United Nations to uphold its historic commitment by implementing the January 5, 1949 resolution, which recognizes the right of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to self-determination.

In a statement released today, Bhat appealed to the international community, especially the United Nations, to take urgent action to resolve the Kashmir dispute in line with its resolutions. He emphasized the necessity of addressing the widespread human rights violations occurring in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJK) and called for immediate global intervention.

Bhat highlighted the ongoing suffering in Kashmir, noting that since 1947, the unresolved issue has resulted in bloodshed and immense hardship for millions of Kashmiris. “The people of Kashmir have endured decades of violence, oppression, and state-sponsored terrorism at the hands of Indian forces,” he said. “Kashmir has been turned into a battlefield where innocent lives are lost every day.”

The JKSM Chairman condemned the actions of India’s current government, accusing it of deliberately altering the region’s demographics by transforming the Muslim-majority population into a minority. He described Kashmir as “a living hell” for its residents, citing the brutality, killings, harassment, and humiliation carried out by Indian security forces.

Since the revocation of Articles 370 and 35A on August 5, 2019, Bhat stated that Jammu and Kashmir has seen an alarming rise in violence and repression. According to JKSM’s reports, there have been 955 killings, 2,455 cases of torture, and 25,591 civilian arrests. Over 1,100 structures have been destroyed, leading to further displacement of families. The toll on the civilian population is staggering: 72 women have been widowed, 196 children orphaned, and 134 women have fallen victim to sexual violence, including rape and molestation.

These statistics underline the urgency of global intervention to address the ongoing crisis. Bhat reiterated that the only peaceful and viable solution to the Kashmir conflict is the holding of a UN-supervised plebiscite, allowing the people of Kashmir to freely decide their political future.

He concluded by urging the United Nations to fulfill its legal and moral obligations, calling for the implementation of the 1949 resolution and ensuring justice for the people of Kashmir.
