AJK President urges Norway to resolve Kashmir dispute

Barrister Chaudhry expressed these views while talking to former member of the Norwegian Council

Islamabad: AJK President urges Norway to resolve Kashmir dispute. President Azad Jammu and Kashmir Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry has said that Norway can play an important role in resolving the long running Kashmir dispute.
Barrister Chaudhry expressed these views while talking to former member of the Norwegian Council, Amir Sheikh who called on him here today. Referring to Norway’s cordial relationship with Pakistan and India, he said, “Being a mutual friend of both the countries Norway can play effective role as a mediator to seek a peaceful and lasting solution of the Kashmir problem”.

He said that peace and security in South Asia was inescapably linked to a just settlement of the Kashmir imbroglio. The AJK president, while briefing him about the prevailing political and human rights situation in the Indian occupied territory of Jammu and Kashmir, said that Norway having an excellent track record on human rights must play its much needed role to end bloodshed and violence in Kashmir.

Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry is an Azad Kashmiri politician who hails from Mirpur. He served as Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir between July 1996 to July 2001 and is currently serving as the President of Azad Kashmir since 25 August 2021.

Early life

Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry is the son of the late Kashmiri leader Chaudhary Noor Hussain Jatt who also founded Azad Muslim Conference along with Sardar Ibrahim Khan but after Sardar Ibrahim Khan left the party, he led it alone. He belongs to a Jatt family and his family has contributions in the movement for a free Jammu and Kashmir. He has also been a member of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

After completing his education, he came back from England to Mirpur in 1987 and joined his father’s party Azad Muslim Conference and contested elections and won.
