China celebrated its inaugural National Ecology Day on August 15, 2023
BEIJING: In a commendable effort to combat pollution and advance its environmental goals, China has reported substantial progress in 2023 toward its “dual carbon” objectives. These objectives aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, with a milestone target of reaching the peak of carbon emissions by 2030.
According to the Xinhua news agency, key figures from China’s achievements in green development last year include a remarkable increase in the total installed capacity of renewable energy, which rose by 20.8% year on year, surpassing 1.4 billion kilowatts by the end of October. This accounts for nearly half (49.9%) of the country’s total installed power generation capacity.
By the end of November 2023, the installed solar power generation reached approximately 560 million kilowatts, reflecting a significant year-on-year increase of 49.9%, according to the National Energy Administration.
China’s commitment to electric mobility also shone through as the China Passenger Car Association reported that wholesale sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) reached an impressive 8.88 million units in 2023, marking a substantial 38% year-on-year expansion. Notably, by September 2023, over 64% of global NEV sales were attributed to China, reinforcing its position as a global leader in the NEV industry.
Moreover, China celebrated its inaugural National Ecology Day on August 15, 2023. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment highlighted significant achievements in environmental indicators, with a 34.4% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP from 2013 to 2022. The PM2.5 density also recorded a notable decrease of 57% during the same period.
In the realm of afforestation, China reported an increase in forest coverage from 21.63% in 2013 to 24.02% in 2022, as per the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.

The Ministry of Ecology and Environment revealed that the share of good air quality days in 339 cities stood at 85.8% in the first 11 months of 2023, indicating a positive trend with a 3.3 percentage point improvement compared to the same period in 2019. China’s concerted efforts in green development showcase its commitment to building a sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
