Grand Opposition Alliance Demands Resignation of Govt & Immediate Elections

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi Stresses Need for Constitutional Supremacy

Islamabad: Pakistan’s opposition parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), have demanded the resignation of the current government and the announcement of fresh elections across the country.

In a media briefing following a dinner hosted by PTI senior leader and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman expressed that the opposition alliance met to discuss the country’s current political situation. He reiterated the collective opposition stance that the February 8 elections were rigged and did not represent the people’s mandate.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman emphasized that the Election Commission of Pakistan had failed to conduct free and fair elections, calling for the immediate resignation of the government and the announcement of fresh elections. He also stated that the tenure of the Chief Election Commissioner had ended, and a consultation process for his replacement should take place. He further urged that if the Election Commission was truly independent, the Chief Election Commissioner should step down.

He added that those in power, without public support, had no right to remain in authority and that the opposition would continue its consultations for achieving its objectives.

Former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi also spoke at the event, expressing concerns over the ongoing situation in the country. He stated that all opposition parties had expressed alarm over the current state of affairs and emphasized the need for the supremacy of the constitution and law, which would require continued struggle.

Abbasi reiterated that the current government, imposed on the people, was illegitimate, and fresh elections were the only solution to address the ongoing issues of terrorism and other national crises. He further called for the release of political prisoners and the abolition of repressive laws like the PECA (Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act).

The dinner event at Asad Qaiser’s residence served as a platform for discussions, with key leaders such as Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, and Mehmood Khan Achakzai in attendance.

The meeting, which was attended by other political figures like Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, Umar Ayub, and Shibli Faraz, focused on the current political situation and the next steps for the opposition’s unified action.

The opposition’s demands for fresh elections and the resignation of the government reflect their determination to ensure that political decisions are made in accordance with the will of the people.
