The unusual general body meeting of the Islamabad Union of Journalists (IUJ) has approved the delay and extension of RIUJ elections. A meeting of the General Body of RIUJ was held under the chairmanship of President Amir Sajjad Syed, which was attended by a large number of journalists. Secretary General of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists Nasir Zaidi, said that “Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists is proud to be fighting for the rights of journalists”. A national level seminar on the ‘Protection Rights of Journalists’ is being held in Islamabad on March 17. Furthermore, the nationwide ‘Journalism Protection March’, scheduled for early next month, was announced. He was addressing the General Body Meeting of RIUJ, as a special guest. From the meeting, RIUJ President Aamir Sajjad Syed, said that they have fought for the rights of journalists even during the Coronavirus Pandemic. RIUJ will continue to work for the protection of their jobs, without any discrimination. He went on to say “I am thankful to everyone who trusted us and passed this resolution”. Senior journalist, CR Shamsi Aur, said “RIUJ is committed to upholding high values. We will not spare any sacrifice for the protection of freedom of press and employment of journalists”. Similarly, Senior Journalist, Fauzia Shahid, said that RIUJ was fighting for the rights of journalists. They continue to stand with them and assure full cooperation. She further exclaimed that It was difficult to take out time in this day and age but the present body was fulfilling its responsibility. RIUJ’s Acting Secretary, Tariq Ali Wirk, said that today’s meeting was convened under Rule 9B of Article 11 of the PFUJ Constitution, under which, elections could be delayed and extended, and it could only be approved by the General Body. Ali Raza Alvi, Mubarak Zeb Khan, Shehzad Chaudhry, Finance Secretary RIUJ Hanif-ur-Rehman, Maira Imran and Aun Shirazi also addressed the meeting. On this occasion, the General Body unanimously approved the extension of the term of the existing body of Rawalpindi Islamabad Union of Journalists, till January 2022. This resolution for the extension was presented by former President, Mubarak Zeb Khan .On this occasion, journalist Nasir Khattak also announced to be a part of RIUJ.
